barbershop's special chords and Voicings with david wright

Geek out about our special chords with Dr. David Wright, perhaps one of our most influential barbershop arrangers of all time. Long time barbershop singers might not be able to say what it is, but they know it when they hear it and sing it...those wonderful barbershop chords! But what is so special about our style, our voicing choices, and chord vocabulary? Let David explain how we are more than 6 chords in TTBB voicing.

how is "that" barbershop with kevin keller

Did you ever listen to a song during a contest, think “That isn’t barbershop?”, look on the scoresheet to see not only didn’t it get disqualified but it looked like the Music judges did NOTHING to it???!!!  How could that possibly be?  Well, we will explore that very thing.  We will go back to the earliest days of how our pioneers defined barbershop and compare it to how we define barbershop today.  We’ll listen to controversial performances throughout time and see what we think at the end.

the evolution of evaluations with richard lewellen

Evaluations (competitor debriefs with members of the judging panel) have always had the potential to be one of the best parts of the competition experience. For some time now most evaluations have come in the form of three 20-minute coaching sessions with one judge from each category. While sessions will still be in the mix of options, a new array of evaluation formats are being piloted in few districts this fall with broad availability likely occurring as soon as Spring 2019, A big part of having evaluations customized for each group is a set of changes in the paradigm for the content and style of evaluations. Come and learn all about the exciting innovations created in response to the suggestions of competitors throughout BHS. Your tour guide will be Richard Lewellen, Singing Category Specialist

vocal expression in singing with david mills

Beyond fundamental vocal production skills, every singer needs to learn more about the myriad of vocally expressive elements that transform musical tones into a heart-felt message. This presentation begins with an overview of the impact of vocal expression in general, but focuses on the elements as they relate to the Singing category. We will examine the various vocal techniques that can be leveraged to bring "life" to the music, and deliver an emotional impact to your audience.
